Course description

This course is a week-long intensive workshop designed to teach the basics of directing acting performance, covering the following topics:
  • Understanding acting
  • The actor-director relationship
  • Unhelpful directions
  • Learning tools for giving helpful directions
  • How to read a script
  • Different directing styles
  • Practice working with actors

Aims of the course:

The ultimate aim is for each student to develop an understanding of how to work with actors, how to look for weak acting and to learn what tools there are at the disposal of the resourceful director in order to get an interesting and compelling performance. Each student should have an opportunity to direct others during the course.


Learning methods:

The following methods will be employed during the course:
  •  Lectures
  • Classroom discussions
  • Watching examples
  • Practical practice with directing actors
  • Short written feedback/evaluation at the end

Grading:

Students will be given grades based on the following:
  • Attendance
  • Attitude
  • Participation
  • Tasks completion
  • Demonstration of learning

The course has a built-in flexibility, so some of these items may change depending on student aptitudes and other external factors.
